AI Role-Play Practice Activity

Bring real-time, workshop-level practice into self-paced eLearning

The Challenge

Traditional eLearning simulates conversations through branching scenarios containing scripted exchanges that funnel learners toward a correct path. The experience is predictable, the choices are limited, and the learning often feels artificial.

AI changes the equation. Instead of selecting from pre-written responses, learners engage in an open, adaptive conversation that reacts to what they actually say. The result is a practice environment that feels real, where learners can make mistakes, adjust their approach, and build genuine confidence before the stakes are real.

What I’m Building

I’m building out a prototype using OpenAI to power both sides of the conversation. On one side, it evaluates the learner’s responses against defined criteria at each decision point. On the other, it generates realistic, in-character replies that adapt to what the learner says. Together, this creates a simulation that feels like a genuine human interaction while quietly enforcing structured learning objectives underneath.

There are off-the-shelf solutions for this, most baked into the higher-end LMS platforms. But where’s the fun in that? Besides, I wanted to see how far I could take this on my own without a big budget.

Phased Roll-Out

This prototype is being developed in stages to progressively enhance realism, performance, and integration into a full learning experience.

Phase 1 — Proof of Concept (Current State)

A working prototype that demonstrates how AI can manage decision points within a live conversation to guide learners toward specific outcomes. This version validates the core concept and interaction model.

Phase 2 — Performance & Behavior Optimization

Focused on improving response time and refining how the AI evaluates learner input. This phase will tighten success and failure criteria and create more consistent, realistic character behavior.

Phase 3 — Course Integration

The role-play will be embedded within a self-paced Articulate Storyline course, enabling structured navigation and capturing success/failure triggers as part of the overall learning experience.

Phase 4 — Coaching & Feedback

Adds targeted coaching and performance feedback based on learner responses, helping learners understand what they did well, where they struggled, and how to improve.
